Salisbury Democracy Alliance is a group of people and organisations dedicated to bringing deliberative democracy to the city by providing citizens with the time, space and capacity to engage in free and equal dialogue. We began in 2017 with Salisbury Democracy Café, which is held at Salisbury Playhouse on every second Saturday in the month and has been very successful. Now we want to create the city’s first Citizens’ Assembly, which will involve randomly selecting a representative group of ordinary people to deliberate on an important local issue and make recommendations to our councils.
So far, the Alliance includes the Salisbury-based academic Graham Smith, who is our official adviser and Professor of Politics at the University of Westminster; the 260-year-old RSA (The Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce), which grew out of The Enlightenment and is pursuing the idea of deliberative democracy; Wessex Community Action, which has agreed to be our banker; deliberative democracy specialists Talk Shop; and Salisbury Democracy Café. The Sortition Foundation has also agreed to help with the random selection of participants in the first Citizens’ Assembly.
