Who we are
BUGS – Burns Unit Group Support is a fund that was set up to support patients with a burn injury treated at Salisbury District Hospital. Our aim is to support patients while they are on Odstock and Sarum wards and as they move out in to the community as outpatients. We support former patients too and cross a large regional area, from Swindon in the north down to Southampton, Portsmouth, Weymouth and across to the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.
Our History
In 1999 a small team of staff visited the only Children's Burns Unit in Nepal. They noticed that patients often felt isolated after leaving hospital and had little support. At the time it was widely recognised that post hospital support for burns patients was also sparse in the UK. As a result, BUGS was created and formally established in May 2000 by a physiotherapist, Senior Sister of the Burns Unit and a former patient.
The Fund
We are small charitable fund of the Stars Appeal. Fund Number 1223.
The Stars Appeal assist us with all the back-office activities required legally to run a charitable fund. This means all funds donated to BUGS can be solely used to support patients. All BUGS has achieved since 2000, has only been possible through donations made directly to the BUGS fund. Currently donations are small with occasional funding through grants.
