Witness Service - Outreach support
Giving evidence in court can be a confusing and distressing experience. The Witness Service is on hand in every criminal court to provide practical and emotional support, and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court.
We are looking for an Outreach Volunteer (based at Salisbury law courts) to support the most vulnerable witnesses, including young witnesses, who require additional support prior to coming to court and on the trial day(s) when they are due to give evidence.
The role is mostly court-based and will involve providing support to witnesses (and their supporters) by explaining the court procedures and legal terminology, showing them around the courtroom before trial and sitting in the courtroom with them, when permitted. Some telephone support may also be given.
We aim to make the process as clear and comfortable as possible for all witnesses, whatever barriers they may face. We can also use our links to Citizens Advice and other support agencies to signpost or refer people for ongoing help, if needed.
Full training is provided but you will need to bring skills of empathy, active listening and great interpersonal skills - you're the type of person who can make people feel at ease whoever they are and whatever their background.
Volunteering is flexible but you'll generally give around 1 full day per week - the days will be different depending on the trials and witnesses you're assigned, not a set weekday.
