Julia’s House is your local children’s hospice, looking after the most seriously ill children in Wiltshire and Dorset, who need 24-hour care for their complex and often rare medical conditions. Volunteers play a vital role in enabling us to be able to care for the child and be there for the family.

More than 30 larger than life balloon dog sculptures – the Swindogs – are set to be unleashed across Swindon during the summer of 2023. The uniquely decorated sculptures will create the UK’s first-ever balloon dog art trail and will raise essential funds for the local children’s hospice charity, Julia’s House.

Julia's House are currently looking for a Project Support Volunteer to assist the Wild in Art Project Manager with administrative duties in relation to the Big Dog Art Trail.

The Big Dog Art Trail will create a free walking trail through some of Swindon’s most well-loved and historic parks, landmarks and streets and will shine a light on art and culture in the heart of the town. As well as encouraging local residents to re-discover the town they love, the paw-some public art spectacle is expected to attract thousands of visitors from outside the town, providing a welcome boost for local businesses.

The Big Dog Art Trail will run from July 15 to September 3 2023 and end with a grand farewell finale where all of the two-metre-high Swindog sculptures will be brought together under one roof. The giant one-of-a-kind creations will then head off to their forever homes after being adopted at a special auction event to raise money for the children’s hospice.

Tasks include supporting the Project Manager with:

  • general administration tasks to support with the art trail and sculptures
  • monitoring email inbox and support answering queries / forwarding emails to relevant team members
  • project specific activities e.g. uniform distribution
  • answering the telephone and dealing with Big Dog Art Trail enquiries as they come in

We are looking for candidates who are personable with a friendly, proactive attitude, and with excellent telephone manner. Previous admin and computer experience is desirable.

We are seeking a volunteer to support approximately 8 hours a week (between Monday-Friday) for the duration of the project. This can be split over two days if preferred. We are hoping to find a candidate to start at the end of March/beginning of April with the project due for completion September 2023.

Applicants must be available to support on key dates of the project. These include:

  • W/C 10th July for install
  • 15th July Weekend (Launch)
  • 3rd Sept for de-install
  • 16-19th Sept for Farewell Weekend & Auction

This is a fantastic opportunity to support on a one of a kind activity. Volunteering provides lots of benefits including gaining new skills and meeting people in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Volunteers will receive a full induction to Julia’s House, the work it does and role specific training. Volunteers will be well supported and will have a clearly identified staff member to whom they report.

This is a voluntary role with no salary.

Julia’s House is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and volunteers. Our aim is for our workforce and volunteers to be truly representative of all sections of society and our clients, and for each employee and volunteer to feel respected and able to give their best.

As part of our values, we are committed to supporting equality, diversity and inclusion. Everyone is welcome and supported in their development at all stages in their journey with us. Based on our current staffing and volunteer profile, we have identified that there is an under-representation of: (a) individuals of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, so would especially welcome BAME applicants for any of our vacant positions; and (b) males, so we would welcome male applicants for any of our vacant positions and specially for any care and nursing roles.
