A Well-City Salisbury creative course for wellbeing from Wessex Archaeology and local artist Sue Martin.

From pollen grains to seeds, snail shells to burnt acorns, environmental archaeology tells us important information about how humans lived on and with the earth.

The Nature of Archaeology will explore what we can learn from what nature leaves behind and how tiny things tell big stories.  Using a range of natural materials and resources over the course of 8-weeks we will use environmental archaeology as a starting point for our creativity, drawing, painting, printing, and recording.

Working with Leigh Chalmers from Wessex Archaeology and artist Sue Martin, there will be an opportunity to use natural dyes made from local vegetation and to create simple painting and mark making tools to use in a sketchbook.

By looking closely or viewing natural objects through a microscope the focus is on tiny details and uncovering a minute hidden world of texture and pattern.

This course will include some *walks in the Old Sarum landscape and a visit to Wessex Archaeology HQ.

Sessions will take place at The Reading Rooms in Stratford Sub Castle. There is parking available on site, and it is on Salisbury Reds bus route R12.

A optional (but encouraged!) welcome session will take place on Monday 8 April, 10 – 11am and is a opportunity to meet your facilitator, other participants, and visit the space prior to the course starting.

At the end of the 8-week course there will also be the opportunity to attend a celebration session on Monday 1 July, 10 – 12:30pm. A chance to come together, celebrate everyone’s creativity and time spent together.

This course is available for adults (20+). All materials provided.

*Some of the walks may be on steep terrain. Please let us know if you any questions or if it would be helpful to discuss your access needs in advance.

Well City is a Salisbury based partnership project providing creative opportunities to support mental health and well-being through arts and heritage.
