SUMMARY

You'll be volunteering your time supporting mothers in prison and their families in the community as part of PACT's Visiting Mum project.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Through our dedicated Volunteer Mentors we work with individual families across the South West to prepare carers and children for visiting HMP Eastwood Park.

Our Visiting Mum scheme aims to reduce reoffending, and reduce the emotional distress caused to women and their children who are separated by incarceration. It has the potential to improve the long-term mental health of both mothers and their children.

Mentors visit with a child, young person or family up to twice a month to offer emotional support, encouragement and guidance, especially in advance of their prison visit. Mentors will then provide transport and accompaniment to HMP Eastwood Park based on the needs of the family. Where required, volunteers offer support to the carer and children after the visit has taken place and to arrange future visits.

In order to take on this role, volunteers must be available on some week days, must be 18 years of age or over, and must have access to a vehicle and hold a full, clean driving licence. Due to training and induction requirements, as well as the importance of the role, PACT expects you to commit to at least 10 hours a month for a minimum of six months.

Extensive training and support from Visiting Mum Volunteer Manager will be provided throughout the Mentoring process.

The role provides an opportunity to develop experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system, gain valuable and transferable skills. Volunteering for PACT can also be very rewarding and fulfilling.
