A writing competition has just been launched by Her Salisbury Story, the National Heritage Lottery funded project run by SI Salisbury, which aims to bring the city’s heritage alive through the celebration of the lives of Salisbury’s women past and present. The competition is for young women aged between 20 and 35 living in the SP postcode area. To enter, young female writers need to write a story or poem inspired by one of the historic or contemporary women featured on the Her Salisbury Story website or by another inspirational Salisbury woman. Stories should be a maximum of 1000 words in length and poems a maximum of 40 lines.

Her Salisbury Story is offering two fabulous prizes of a week’s stay at author Cornelia Funke’s artists’ retreat in Volterra, Tuscany, generously donated by Cornelia herself.

Cornelia said: ‘I was excited to hear about the Her Salisbury Story project and the team’s ambition to inspire young women through the lives of other women who have gone before. As Salisbury has been an inspiration to me in my writing, I was delighted to be able to contribute to the project by offering this prize of inviting two aspiring young female writers to join my artists’ retreat’.

The two lucky winners will receive return flights to Italy, transfers from the airport to the retreat and accommodation. Entrants need to register interest in the competition by filling in the application form on the website here by 15 August, where full details of the competition and terms and conditions are also available. Once eligibility is confirmed, entrants need to send their submission by the competition closing date of 1 September 2021 and results will be announced on or before 31 October 2021.

Submissions will initially be judged by a panel of three local female writers: Julia North, Frances Owen and Jayne Woodhouse. A short list of six entries will then be forwarded to Cornelia who will pick the two winners.
