About

Manage a newly acquired 34 acre piece of land as a nature reserve to promote biodiversity and public enjoyment of nature.

We are newly registered charity that has raised the funds to purchase some 34 acres of neglected farmland in Salisbury, traversed by a Public Right of Way linking Harnham and Lower Bemerton. Now we working to restore biodiversity and enhance acess for everyone enjoy this wonderful piece of nature in the heart of our City.

Thanks to the tremendous support of local people and organisations, the 34 acres of meadows known as Fitzgerald Farm, between Lower Bemerton and Harnham in Salisbury, has been secured for the community.

Come and join us as we now look to restore and enhance the area and its wildlife for future generations.

Who we are

Broken Bridges Nature Reserve is a charitable incorporated organisation (Registered Charity Number 1213230).

What needs to be done

Once a thriving haven for nature, the wildlife of the meadows has sadly declined due to the lack of suitable management over many years. Rank vegetation has established, trees are dying and the condition of the footpath is very poor due to erosion from flooding and tree roots.

The meadows include part of the River Avon Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, along with important habitats such as wet floodplain meadows, wood pasture, rare carr woodland and chalk streams.

Our aim is to restore and enhance its wildlife interest for everyone to enjoy and to improve access for all along the well-used Broken Bridges public footpath, which provides a vital link between Harnham and Bemerton.  This work includes:

  • Restore the biodiversity of the meadows by re-introducing suitable grazing
  • Move barbed wire fences away from the path to give walkers breathing space to enjoy the rich wildlife of the area
  • Improve access for all along the footpath, while keeping its rustic character
  • Control invasive species along the river
