Head Up! supports young people with disabilities in school and considering higher education.
Head Up! is an organisation which offers advice, support, and solidarity to young people with disabilities, physical or mental health conditions, specific learning difficulties, or who are neurodivergent. At university, the number of disabled students in one place makes it much easier to find a sense of community and support - Head Up! was founded five years ago with the aim of extending this support to younger students through sharing our experiences, encouraging them to consider their options at higher education level, and helping them to feel less alone. As part of our work, we run a mentoring scheme, which is a year-long partnership between GCSE/A-Level students and a current university student or recent graduate mentor. Mentoring consists of virtual sessions that total an hour a month, and can focus on topics such as managing studying as a disabled and/or neurodivergent student, considering a range of higher education options, study skills, and seeking support or reasonable adjustments. Students can indicate a preference for being matched with a student with a similar condition to themselves, or a student studying a subject they are interested in.
