Wiltshire Early Mental Health Counselling and Support Service

At Barnardo's, we provide a Wiltshire wide service for young people aged 5-18 experiencing early mental health
issues. Services offered include information and advice, signposting, positive activities, group work and counselling.
We offer services supporting children and young people's emotional health and well-being, from one-to-one
counselling to group work and schools-based programmes. We have centres where children and young people can visit and have a trained worker they can trust and talk to. We help them build their confidence and get to the root of their difficulties.

Counselling/therapy

When you meet with our highly trained specialist counsellors you are given the opportunity to discuss what is on
your mind. Our counsellors won’t look down on you or judge you about anything you tell them. If you are 13 or over we’ll ask you whether you want us to involve a parent or carer, particularly for the first session.
We can offer 6 – 8 sessions provided online, by phone or face to face (COVID 19 lockdown dependent). All our
sessions are confidential, for most people, the 6 – 8 sessions enable a trusting relationship to develop.
Our specialist counselling can help with problems that have resulted in you feeling low or worried or anxious or
stressed or having problems with sleep or feeling angry or feeling bad about yourself or your relationships or any combination of these. 6 – 8 sessions of counselling can really build your well-being. We work closely with CAMHS and other organisations so we can ensure you do get the support you need if our counselling is not the right support for you.

Decider Skills Groups

Barnardo's also deliver 'The Decider Skills' groups. The Decider Skills use cognitive behaviour therapy to teach
children, young people and adults the skills to recognise their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, enabling them to monitor and manage their own emotions and mental health. The skills aim to focus on building children and young people’s confidence and resilience. This is based upon helping children and young people to address the challenges of impulsive behaviour such as:

  • Self-harm
  • Avoidance
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Aggression
  • Substance misuse
  • Binge eating
