Domestic Abuse (DA), also known as Domestic Violence or Intimate Partner Violence, is a pattern of behaviour used by one person to gain power and control over another person in a familial or intimate relationship.
Domestic Abuse can occur in any type of intimate relationship or past relationship, including married couples, dating partners, same-sex couples, and family members. Whilst the perpetrator is most often a partner or an ex-partner, Domestic Abuse may also be committed by an adult child or grandchild, a parent or grandparent, or sibling.
Whilst FearFree are clear that Domestic Abuse can happen to anyone, it remains a gendered crime, and in the majority of cases, it is experienced by women and is perpetrated by men.
