The Sidmouth Street club is 'one of the jolliest places in Devizes' according to one longstanding volunteer, and her verdict would be echoed by members, carers and many members of the local community.
The club in the heart of Devizes provides a warm, stimulating and friendly environment for up to eight members at a time. Since opening in 2008 it has built up strong links with its community and has frequent visits from local actors and musicians.
The club has won a number of awards, including Best Community Group in the Wiltshire Life Awards and a Services to the People award from the Mayor of Devizes.
The garden, a haven of greenery maintained by volunteers, has won its category of Devizes in Bloom multiple time was graded as Outstanding by the Royal Horticultural Society's South West in Bloom competition four times in a row pre-pandemic. It's greatly enjoyed by club members who plant and harvest their own vegetables and this year watched the progress of a nesting blackbird and her young.
The club has two honorary members who visit two days each week, the dementia 'therapy dogs' Higby and Dottie. Volunteer therapy dogs are also regular visitors.
What to expect at Sidmouth Street Club
Regular activities include photography, painting, cooking, art therapy, mosaic making, dance, gardening and reminiscence, often with the club's iPad. While there is a wide choice of small group activities, club members are also very welcome to 'do their own thing' in the company of others.
Sidmouth Street is open from 9.45am - 3.45pm from Tuesday to Friday each week. It is run by our day care services manager Grant Newton and club manager Becci Field.
