Road Safety Service Information
What we do
Globally, road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5-29 years, and around one third of children in Year 6 in Wiltshire are overweight or living with obesity.
We offer high quality practical training for pupils, appropriate for their needs, to help them to develop the necessary skills and understanding for safe road use.
What the service provides
Please book via the Right Choice Store:
‘Walk Safe’- targeting Year 1, 3 and 6 pupils. A combination of classroom and practical activities aimed at encouraging children and families to walk more often and more safely. Year 6 sessions focus on transition to secondary schools, including route planning.
This training is currently offered free-of-charge to all Wiltshire primary schools.
‘Bikeability’ is the national cycle training programme and aims to give riders the practical skills and confidence to deal with real traffic, encouraging children to get on their bikes for leisure or to make independent journeys. There are three core Bikeability Levels:
Level 1 (traffic-free) and Level 2 (on- road) are offered to pupils in Year 6 and above as a combined course. This usually takes place over 2 days, starting in a traffic-free environment such as a playground and moving onto quiet local roads once riders have achieved the necessary outcomes. All riders receive a certificate and badge for each level attended. Level 1/2 Courses run with a maximum ratio of 6 riders per instructor.
Level 3 Bikeability training is available for students in Year 7 and above (and occasionally towards the end of Year 6) who have already achieved Level 2 Bikeability outcomes. This module helps riders develop the necessary skills for more challenging roads and traffic situations – busier streets, queuing traffic, complex junctions and roundabouts. It also includes planning routes for safe cycling. Training is delivered over a 3-hour session in small groups of 2 or 3 riders per instructor.
All Bikeability training is delivered by professional, nationally qualified and DBS-checked instructors and takes place at risk-assessed locations.
Bikeability is significantly subsidised by Active Travel England on behalf of the UK Government. Please talk to us about how we might help to overcome barriers for your pupils to enable them to participate in training. Check out our Bikeability guidance for schools in the resources section.
Scootability - our Scootability programme is currently being reviewed and will not be offered for 2025-26.
