Did you know that one in five people in the UK has a disability—and that 80% of these disabilities are ‘hidden’?
Hidden disabilities can impact your interactions with clients or service users or may influence the way in which you work with colleagues or manage staff or volunteers. Perhaps you have a hidden disability yourself… and maybe it impacts your work or social life.
From a workplace point of view, understanding some of the conditions which affect employees can help you make positive moves to accommodate any needs and make small changes that could help improve morale and motivate employees and volunteers.
From a service user perspective, volunteers and employees who understand the importance of making adjustments to accommodate disabilities will enhance the user's experience—good for business, improving reputation, and in terms of the service industry, improving the user experience and outcomes.
Delegates will:
- Discuss and examine different types of hidden disability
- Discuss own impairments (where willing), how they affect everyday life and what accommodations would make their life easier
- Discuss effective means of supporting friends, colleagues or clients with a variety of hidden disabilities
- Understand the law in relation to protecting individuals with hidden disabilities
- Understand that actions which may seem positively discriminatory towards colleagues may actually be put in place to accommodate a hidden disability
This training is being delivered by Winterbury Training on behalf of Wessex Community Action for volunteers and staff from Voluntary and Community Sector organisations based in Wiltshire.
