In 2021, the Office of National Statistics published data that showed only 22% of autistic people were in any kind of paid employment. Additionally, the National Autistic Society show that autistic people may experience barriers at every stage of their search for employment including, the wording of advertisements, the application process, the interview, induction and retaining employment. This taster session will examine some of the factors that may lead to barriers in employment for autistic people, and look at ways that we may not only increase the acceptance of autism in the workplace but also why in the unique context of twenty-first century Britain, we should embrace the positive influence of a neurodiverse workforce.

This 2hr course provides an introduction to how we may make reasonable adjustments to accept and support autistic people in the workplace and in terms of preparation for work.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • An understanding of at least four barriers that autistic people may face when seeking employment or undertaking employment.
  • Knowledge of the positive impact autistic people can bring to the workforce.
  • A basic familiarity with legislation related to equality of opportunities and autism.
  • Familiarity with at least two approaches that may be helpful for autistic people in the workplace
  • Knowledge of the heterogeneity of autism.

This FULLY FUNDED session is being offered in partnership with WEA and as a condition of the funding, all learners will need to enrol with WEA.
