Read Easy is a national charity that helps adults who want to improve their reading skills using our trained volunteers to work one-to-one with readers. Coordinators are central to our work. This is what one of our current coordinators has to say about the role: As coordinator, my role is to bring people together and make it work! Here’s a brief snapshot of some of the things I have been doing over the past couple of weeks:
- Meeting with a new reader, making a simple assessment of their needs and abilities and enrolling them on the programme. Identifying a potential coach for them and arranging to introduce them.
- Interviewing a new coach – alongside my colleague the volunteer recruiter.
- Meeting with a recently established reading pair to see how they are getting on and answering any queries.
- Discussing with colleagues on the management team – including our literacy specialists – how we can support readers and coaches who are reaching the end of our programme so the readers can continue to develop their skills.
- Responding to enquiries from agencies about potential readers who need our help; most of our readers come via an agency referral.
As you can see, it’s a hugely varied, very interesting and rewarding role. I’m supported by a really helpful local management team and the national organisation also provides excellent back-up and structure.
